I don't think this is a valid excuse. Like, where does that type of excuse end, exactly? Hating gay people is okay because it's cultural? Okay, so what about black people? That was a pretty cultural thing for quite a while. What about slavery? It could be argued that owning slaves was part of white southern culture, so is that valid? Looking way back, there are cultures that practiced ritual human sacrifice.
When you justify hate and exclusion for the sake of culture, where does it end? Where can it end? If you allow it at all, any cutoff you can offer becomes totally arbitrary.
Not saying the artist is definitely a homophobe, I don't know, just say that this shouldn't be considered a valid excuse if so.
